Fighting sex addiction through therapy and treatment Sex addiction, also known as hypersexual disorder, is a condition in which an individual feels compelled to engage in sexual behaviors to an excessive degree, to the point where it begins to negatively impact their daily life and relationships. Sexual addiction can take many forms, such as compulsive masturbation, pornography use, exhibitionism, voyeurism, and infidelity.  Sex addiction affects both males and females, although it is more commonly associated with men. Men are more likely to engage in high-risk sexual behaviors, such as anonymous sex, multiple partners, and sex with prostitutes. However, women can also suffer from sex addiction, and their behaviors may manifest differently. Women with sexual addiction may engage in compulsive masturbation, excessive pornography use, or engage in sexual activity with multiple partners in an attempt to fill a void. There are many different theories about the causes of sex addiction. Some researchers believe that signs of sex addiction may be related to a chemical imbalance in the brain or a genetic predisposition. Others suggest that it may be a result of childhood trauma or abuse, which may lead to a need for sexual validation or a lack of healthy coping mechanisms.
